CD and DVD Audio Store
DVD Audio (DVD-A) is a very High Fidelity digital music format which is capable of 5.1 channel surround sound. DVD-A contains no video like an ordinary DVD.
Music is stored on the DVD in either uncompressed PCM format or in a lossless format called Meridian Lossless Packing.
While CD "red book" audio is 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, DVD-A supports up to 24 bit and sample rates up to 192 kHz (although typically uses 96 kHz), so effectively is twice as many samples per second.
There is a competing system called SACD (Super Audio CD) made by Sony, and as no winner is apparent they are likely to co-exist.
